malcolm.lambert@gmail.comy cerddor is Welsh for "musician" - or maybe "minstrel, bard".
My family lived in Wales for a while as a child, and I attended a Welsh speaking school. Sadly, my knowledge of Welsh faded with time, and I now know very little. Maybe one day...
I think of myself as an all round musician. I play clarinet, mandolin and sing to a reasonable standard; I can get by on guitar, alto sax, fiddle, euphonium, english concertina; I'm currently learning northumbrian bagpipes, doumbek, penny whistle. I've directed choirs, and played with orchestras, brass bands and folk groups.
The process of learning to play a new instrument is a real joy. Getting from not knowing which end to hold, to being able to play a tune - and even get to the stage of being able to play with others. It's totally absorbing, and when things go right, exhilarating. Beyond that, it's a l - o - n - g haul to getting really good at an instrument. Some music specialists say: about 5,000 hours playing time. I've only ever given that much time to singing, clarinet and mandolin. If only life wasn't so short! Still, I do believe that this life is only part of the whole: maybe there's more music to come!
And when I'm not playing music, I'm listening to it. Oh yes, and sometimes I work, socialise, sleep, cuddle, chat, eat, drink, play, look out of the window, and lurk on the intertubes.
